The Stories, The Song

In June 2017, the Howell Carnegie Library hosted an event entitled 101 Things That Happened On the Mackinac Bridge. It was presented by Mike Fornes to a packed crowd in the Library’s Meabon Room. Mr. Fornes is an engaging, knowledgeable speaker and it only makes sense: as a journalist, Mike Fornes covered the Mackinac Bridge for over 20 years, has written two books about it (plus a few more on the US Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw), and has given over 2,000 tours of the bridge!

Considering how popular his Mighty Mac presentation was, we asked Mr. Fornes back to share more of his knowledge of beloved Michigan icons with our community. This year, Mr. Fornes returns to speak and sing about another famous Great Lakes subject: the Edmund Fitzgerald, immortalized by Canadian folk singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot in his ballad, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” Mike Fornes is well-suited to share the tale of the Edmund Fitzgerald, not only because he has great knowledge of northern Michigan and the Great Lakes, but also because he portrays “Gord” in a Gordon Lightfoot Tribute band. With a unique blend of music and history, Mr. Fornes tells the haunting, tragic story of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of her 29-man crew.

Join us Wednesday, September 4, 7-8:30 pm at the Historic Howell Theater (315 E Grand River, Howell) for an evening of musical storytelling about the shipwreck that touched so many of us: The Edmund Fitzgerald: The Stories, The Song with Mike Fornes
