Teen Volunteer Session (grades 7-12)

July 15, 2024 03:30PM-04:30PM @ Youth Services Department (2 seats)

Teens (grades 7-12) can earn volunteer hours and help support the library by assisting Youth Department Staff with specific tasks such as using a die-cut machine to cut out shapes, cleaning toys, finding books, and more. 

Please let library staff know if you need your hours tracked.

Registration is required and begins at 9am on Monday, July 1. Please register each teen individually.

Virtual Author Talk: Surviving the Summer with The Last Kids on Earth and Max Brallier (grades 3-6)

Would you survive a zombie apocalypse? Join us to talk with New York Times bestselling author Max Brallier about The Last Kids on Earth, both the book series and the animated series on Netflix. In this virtual event, Max will share how he came up with the different monsters and villains as well as the unique ways that Jack and his friends figure out to defeat them.

Go with the Flow: Yoga for Teens (grades 8-12) & Adults

A beginner yoga class for adults and students grades 8-12, with music chosen expressly for teens and "young at heart" adults. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one. 

Drop-in; no registration required. This event is free. Please note that this event runs after the library closes at 7 pm.

About the instructor:

Sophie Montesanti knows all about the unrelenting pressure facing young people. An all-state distance swimmer for Howell High School in 2016, she found herself experiencing debilitating panic attacks accompanied by unexplained physical symptoms. At her doctor's suggestion, Sophie started practicing yoga to help ease her anxiety and eventually earned her 200-hour teaching certificate at age 16. She is a Michigan State University College of Human Medicine student and teaches and regularly practices yoga in East Lansing.
 

Colder Than Ice... A Family Science Show (Outdoors) (grades K-6 with parents/caregivers)

Flint Children's Museum presents "Colder Than Ice" a family science show about dry ice. Drop-in; no registration required. This event is free. 

Please note:

  • We will be sitting on the grass. You can bring a tarp/blanket to sit on, sunscreen, hats, and/or bug spray.
  • In case of poor weather, this event will occur in the library with limited seating available.

Juggling Workshop (grades 4-8) (Outdoors)

July 22, 2024 01:00PM-01:45PM @ Library Lawn (40 seats)

Joel Tacey will get you moving, tossing, and catching as you learn the basics of juggling. For students entering grades 4-8. Free.

Registration is required and begins at 9am on Monday, July 8. Please register each participant.

Teen Cooking Class: Tacos! (grades 6-12)

July 24, 2024 05:00PM-06:45PM @ Hidden Springs Church (16 seats)

Register with your friends or come by yourself for this fun evening out. Together you'll prepare fresh tortillas, guacamole, taco fillings/toppings, and a sweet dessert in this hands-on class featuring: 

  • Tortillas
  • Guacamole
  • Taco fillings/toppings
  • Fruit "salsa" dessert

Teens will be actively participating in the preparation of the meal in between a few demonstrations. They will be standing, cooking and working for most of the class. At the end we will enjoy the food we've prepared - so come hungry!

This is a free hands-on class for teens entering grades 6-12. It is held at Hidden Springs Church. Registration is required and begins at 9am on Thursday, July 10. Please register each teen that will be attending & participating.

Please note:

  • You will work with other students in groups of 4, sharing workstations and equipment.
  • This hands-on class is limited to 16 students.
  • Please wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and have long hair tied back.

ArtConnect: Pop-Up Makerspace

This month's ArtConnect will be a fiber arts themed Pop-up Makerspace! Try out our knitting machines, needle felting supplies, heat press, and more. The library will have an assortment of fiber art and other crafting supplies on hand.

ArtConnect is an opportunity to connect with local artisans and other community members to share the joy of art and try out new techniques and projects. Every other month, local artisans will guide you through a featured art project, or you can bring your own project to work on! Supplies will be provided for the featured project, as supplies last. For the months without a featured project, ArtConnect will serve as a Pop-Up Makerspace and provide the opportunity to use our space for your crafting desires and try out new equipment!

Disney Trivia (grades 6-12)

Enjoy pizza, snacks, and time with your friends while competing in Disney trivia. Come alone or with a team and compete for a prize. For students in grades 6-12. Free.
