• All patrons must have a current Researcher Registration Form on file with the Information Desk. The registration form must be renewed each year. Current government-issued photo ID must be presented with a Registration Form.
  • Patrons must be 10 years or older to use the LHR/Archives. All minors, (10-17) must be accompanied by an adult.
  • All patrons must sign in at the Information Desk upon entering the LHR/Archives. You will be asked to provide your government-issued photo ID on each visit.
  • Storage of briefcase, portfolio, notebook, coat, purse, computer case, etc., on hooks on the back of the Archives door or at the Information Desk, for the LHR, is mandatory.
  • All materials must be used only in the LHR/Archives. Materials cannot be checked out.
  • Theft or mutilation of materials is a crime.
  • Pencils, computer, or audio recording devices may be used for taking notes. Use of pens is prohibited. Use of audio recording devices should not disturb ther researchers. Cameras are allowed for taking pictures without flash.
  • To photocopy LHR/Archives materials, please ask a librarian at the Information Desk. Charges apply, view photocopying information.
  • Patrons may not eat, drink, or use cell phones to make or receive calls in the LHR/Archives.
  • In order to respect other researchers, please whisper when any talking is needed.
  • Do not reshelve any materials. Leave materials on the table when you are finished and notify staff.
  • Patron will make every effort possible to protect and preserve the documents being used.
  • The LHR/Archives is reserved for individuals using the LHR/Archives collections. Computers in the LHR room are available for research directly related to genealogy and not general internet use. Computers in the Archives are for staff use only.
  • Make sure your hands are clean and dry.
  • You will be provided with gloves to wear while handling photographs.
  • Keep all documents and volumes flat on the table.
  • Use only one folder of material at a time.
  • Keep all materials in the folder they came from and in their original order.
  • When taking notes please make sure your paper is on the table and not on top of the materials.
  • Do not lean on or place items on top of the materials.
  • Do not add to or erase any marks on the materials.
  • Staff have the right to inspect materials.
  • Staff reserves the right to restrict access to materials deemed too fragile to handle and/or are valuable. Reasonable attempts will be made to provide access to reproductions of the originals.
  • Researchers must abide by the Rights & Responsibilities of Users library policy.
  • The materials are being made available under the assumption that the researcher is conducting their research in compliance with copyright law. View our Permissions Policies to learn more about these laws.
  • Donor Gift Agreement – The Howell Carnegie District Library supports and encourages the research efforts of its community members/users. Should your research at LHR/Archives result in a published work, we ask that you consider donating a copy so that we may consider adding the resulting work to our collection.
